The Buddaflies Journey: How We Took Flight in 2018

Every great brand has a story, and at Buddaflies, ours began in 2018 with a simple yet powerful vision: to blend cannabis culture, creativity, and community into something meaningful. Founded by Stephen Binett, Buddaflies quickly evolved from pop-up events in Washington, DC, into a fully realized cannabis and lifestyle brand. Along the way, we've had incredible people join our team, each bringing unique skills that have helped Buddaflies soar to new heights.

The Visionary: Stephen Binett

It all started with Stephen Binett in 2018, who had a dream of creating a brand that was about more than just selling cannabis products. For Stephen, cannabis was a gateway to self-expression, wellness, and empowerment. He saw an opportunity in Washington, DC's changing cannabis laws and used it to create Buddaflies—a brand that merges cannabis with streetwear fashion and culture.

Buddaflies’ early days were all about connecting with the community through pop-up events, where cannabis enthusiasts, artists, and creatives could come together and share ideas. These events laid the foundation for the brand's identity, combining art, music, and cannabis in a way that felt organic and exciting.

Building the Team: Edith Jimenez

As Buddaflies began to grow, so did the need for a solid foundation to manage inventory and operations. That’s when Edith Jimenez came on board as our Inventory Manager. Edith was there from the early days, ensuring that our product offerings were not only high-quality but also organized and ready to meet the demand from our growing customer base. Her meticulous attention to detail allowed Buddaflies to scale, helping us move from pop-ups to a more established presence in Washington, DC's cannabis scene.

Expanding with Family: Joshua Binett

In 2021, Stephen's brother, Joshua Binett, joined Buddaflies as Head of Sales, bringing with him years of experience in customer relations and business development. Joshua’s passion for the brand, coupled with his ability to connect with people, helped Buddaflies expand its reach and attract new customers. His sales strategies enabled us to forge stronger relationships with both retail and individual clients, ensuring that Buddaflies continued to grow while staying true to our core values of community, creativity, and cannabis.

Branding the Vision: Abel Martinez

The Buddaflies aesthetic has always been a key part of our identity, and in 2022, Abel Martinez joined the team as our Branding and Design Manager. Abel brought fresh energy and a sharp eye for design, helping us translate the Buddaflies ethos into visuals that resonate with our audience. From creating bold packaging to designing our streetwear line, Abel has been instrumental in shaping the look and feel of Buddaflies, ensuring that every product reflects our commitment to creativity and quality.

The Future of Buddaflies

As we continue to grow, Buddaflies remains committed to the values we started with: authenticity, community, and empowerment through cannabis and creativity. From our humble beginnings as a pop-up brand to now having a full-fledged team driving our vision forward, each member of Buddaflies has played a pivotal role in our journey.

With the continued efforts of Stephen, Edith, Joshua, and Abel, we are excited for what’s next. As we expand into online retail with our Conditional Medical Cannabis Internet Retailer License and develop new cannabis strains and products, the future of Buddaflies looks brighter than ever.

Stay tuned for the next chapter in the Buddaflies story, and thank you to everyone who has been a part of our journey from day one. Together, we’re not just a brand—we’re a movement.

Washington, D.C. has emerged as a unique hub for cannabis culture, blending political activism with a vibrant local scene. Since the passage of Initiative 71 in 2014, which allows adults 21 and over to possess and grow small amounts of cannabis, the culture has flourished despite complex legalities. D.C.’s approach to legalization revolves around "gifting," enabling businesses to offer cannabis as a gift with the purchase of other products. This has fostered a thriving community of entrepreneurs and a rich array of cannabis-related events, from pop-ups to educational workshops.
